  • SC / ST Candidates: 5 Years relaxation in upper age limit.

  • PwBD Candidates: 10 to 15 Years relaxation as applicable.
  • Other age relaxation is applicable as per SSC and Government of India rules.

• Candidates must have passed 12th Standard or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.

• The required qualification must have been acquired on or before 01 August 2026.

• Candidates must also have the required Stenography Skill for appearing in the Skill Test.

• In the Skill Test, Grade ‘C’ candidates are given a 10-minute dictation at 100 words per minute in English or Hindi.
Stenographer Grade ‘D’
Group ‘C’
• Candidates must have passed 12th Standard or equivalent examination from a recognized Board or University.

• The required qualification must have been acquired on or before 01 August 2026.

• Candidates must have the required Stenography Skill for the Skill Test.

• In the Skill Test, Grade ‘D’ candidates are given a 10-minute dictation at 80 words per minute in English or Hindi.

SSC Stenographer 2026 Eligibility Criteria

Educational Eligibility

  1. The candidate must have passed 12th Standard or equivalent from a recognized Board or University.
  2. The candidate must have acquired the required educational qualification by 01 August 2026.
  3. Candidates with an equivalent qualification may need to produce the relevant equivalence certificate during Document Verification.

Nationality / Citizenship

  1. A candidate must be a citizen of India, or a subject of Nepal or Bhutan, or a person of Indian origin who has migrated from the countries mentioned in the official notification with the intention of permanently settling in India.
  2. Candidates who require an eligibility certificate from the Government of India must produce the required certificate before appointment.

Stenography Skill Requirement

  1. Grade ‘C’: 10-minute dictation at 100 w.p.m. in English or Hindi.
  2. Grade ‘D’: 10-minute dictation at 80 w.p.m. in English or Hindi.
  3. The dictated matter has to be transcribed on a computer within the prescribed time.

Important: SSC initially mentioned approximately 731 tentative vacancies. The Commission later published tentative vacancy details showing 149 vacancies for Grade ‘C’ and 1,021 vacancies for Grade ‘D’, making the updated tentative total 1,170 posts. Candidates should always check the latest vacancy notice published by SSC before relying on the final vacancy figure.

SSC Stenographer 2026 Exam Pattern

The Computer Based Examination will contain objective type multiple-choice questions. The examination will have three parts covering General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Awareness and English Language & Comprehension.

  • Candidates eligible for a scribe will get compensatory time as per SSC rules.
  • There will be 0.25 marks negative marking for every wrong answer.
  • Questions are generally set in English and Hindi, except the English Language & Comprehension section.

SSC Stenographer Skill Test 2026

Candidates shortlisted on the basis of the Computer Based Examination will be called for the Stenography Skill Test. The Skill Test is conducted on computer and the dictation speed depends on the grade applied for.

The Skill Test will be held at SSC Regional Offices or other centres decided by the Commission. Detailed instructions will be provided to candidates called for the Skill Test.

SSC Stenographer 2026 Pay Scale & Selection Process

  • Grade ‘C’ Pay Level: The post is generally placed at Pay Level 6 / Level 7 depending on the concerned department and post.
  • Grade ‘D’ Pay Level: Stenographer Grade ‘D’ posts are placed at Pay Level 4.
  • Selection Process: The selection process includes the Computer Based Examination followed by the Stenography Skill Test. Document Verification is carried out by the concerned User Departments.
  • Final Merit: Candidates are considered for selection according to the applicable SSC rules and examination performance. The Skill Test is conducted as a required qualifying stage.

How to Apply Online SSC Stenographer Recruitment 2026

1. Visit the official Staff Selection Commission website ssc.gov.in to access the online application system.

2. New candidates should complete the One-Time Registration (OTR) on the new SSC website before filling the examination application form.

3. Open the notification for Stenographer Grade ‘C’ & ‘D’ Examination, 2026 and read all instructions carefully.

4. Log in to your SSC account and enter your personal, educational and other required information correctly.

5. Select the applicable Stenographer Grade and complete the application form according to the instructions given by SSC.

6. Upload the required documents and complete the required authentication or verification process as applicable.

7. Pay the application fee, if applicable. The online fee payment facility was available up to 16 May 2026 (11:00 PM).

8. Before final submission, carefully check all information entered in the form and save a copy of the submitted application for future reference.
